August is an ancient month, first named after Augustus Caesar. Interestingly, August obtained it’s 31 days, as Roman leaders did not want to give Augustus an ‘inferior’ month of ‘just’ 30 days since Julius’ month (July) had 31 days.
Continuing it’s long standing tradition of being a special month, August also has 2 birthstones- the well known Peridot as well as a lesser known stone called sardonyx. Peridot is typically associated with being a brilliant lime green color, however it’s name originates in the French word “peritot” (gold), referring to some Peridot material leaning towards a slightly golden color. Many people have never heard of August’s second birthstone before. Sardonyx is a type of mottled, rust-colored agate, which has been treasured in ancient times. It lends itself to being carved into beautiful cameos and intaglios, as well as being polished into beads.
